TENNIS PLAYERS - BELLE EPOQUE, tenniswomen, players, competi - Lot 230
TENNIS PLAYERS - BELLE EPOQUE, tenniswomen, players, competitions, 1900s 10 photos, silver prints (+ one on citrate paper) from the period Two backs annotated (years) Dimensions: from 6.5 x 9.5 cm to 9 x 14 cm Remnants of paper on some spines Note: This set of photographs depicts female tennis players at competitions in the early XXᵉ century, a period corresponding to the sport's international boom during the Belle Époque. Women's tennis underwent significant development, particularly in British and European clubs, and became one of the most visible sports in the illustrated press. From the end of the XIXᵉ century, major tournaments - in particular Wimbledon, which opened its women's championship in 1884 - contributed to the recognition of great players and the spread of the image of women's tennis. Photographs of female players in competition gear, often taken on the courts or at tournaments, contribute to the popularization of the sport and bear witness to the evolution of women's sporting practices in Western societies at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. These prints thus provide documentary evidence of sports iconography and the growing place of women in sport during the Belle Époque.
