Note: Walter Carone (1920-1982) follows in the tradition of French humanist photography, favoring a sensitive, intuitive approach to portraiture. His aim was not to idealize his subjects, but to reveal a more intimate truth, often imbued with fragility, humor or melancholy. His work is distinguished by a great formal sobriety and a particular attention to expressions and suspended moments.
In Maurice Chevalier (1963), Carone breaks with the codes of the official portrait to create an image that is both theatrical and profoundly human. The singular staging, combined with the surprised expression of the famous artist, creates a strong visual tension between notoriety and vulnerability. The 1991 silver print, signed, titled, dated and sited, accurately reproduces the richness of the contrasts, giving the work a timeless dimension.
