Matthieu CHAZAL (1974 - 2024) - Lot 126

Matthieu CHAZAL (1974 - 2024) Donets River, Ukraine, 2023 Silver print Signed, titled, dated Dimensions: 18 x 24 cm Slight fold Note: In this recent image, Matthieu Chazal confronts landscape and traces of destruction. The broken structure of the bridge, fragmented and suspended above the water, becomes a dark, almost monumental sculptural form that organizes the entire composition. In the foreground, two human figures move a circular object - a simple, everyday gesture that contrasts with the scale of the context. This discreet presence introduces a human dimension to an environment marked by war, without ever becoming spectacular. Black and white accentuates the harshness of the materials and the coldness of the place, while the lines of the bridge guide the eye towards the horizon. In this way, Chazal constructs an image that is both silent and tense, where the landscape becomes an indirect witness to a conflict, captured in a refined, almost timeless form.
