Note: The event received little press coverage. Only photojournalist Jean-Pierre Laffont, sent by the Gamma agency, was commissioned to report on it. Today, his images provide invaluable testimony to this seminal moment.
This photograph by Jean-Pierre Laffont documents a seminal moment in contemporary history: the first Gay Pride held in New York in 1970, in the wake of the Stonewall riots. The image captures the collective energy of a still militant, minority march, where participants, often anonymous, publicly assert their identity in a still hostile social context. Signs, direct glances and the proximity of bodies convey both the demands and the solidarity of a fledgling movement.
As a committed photojournalist, Laffont captures the human and political dimension of the event, with an immersive approach that is characteristic of his work. His framing in the heart of the crowd places the viewer at the very heart of the demonstration, revealing a community in the making. Rarely covered by the media at the time, these images bear essential witness to the event, which today has a strong historical and symbolic significance.
