SUCKLING VIRGIN, CIRCA 1480-1500 - Lot 195
SUCKLING VIRGIN, CIRCA 1480-1500 France, Bourbonnais or Loire Valley, entourage of Michel Colombe Sculpture in light-colored stone depicting the standing Virgin holding her nursing Child Jesus. The Virgin is dressed in a long robe with deep, supple folds, covered by a mantle that falls in wide drapes. The oval face, with its soft, interiorized modelling, and the delicate treatment of the hands and folds, are in keeping with the aesthetic of the late 15th century, characteristic of French sculpture of the nascent Renaissance. The style and sensibility of this work are related to productions from the Bourbonnais or Loire Valley regions, in the entourage of Michel Colombe, without direct attribution. The sculpture stands on an integrated pedestal. Condition: broken and repaired (old restorations visible), accidents and missing parts, general surface wear. Height: 46 cm.
