WANG Yan Cheng (Born 1960) - Lot 260
WANG Yan Cheng (Born 1960) Man and Nature Oil on canvas Signed lower right 81 x 65 cm Note: A major figure in contemporary Chinese-French abstraction, Wang Yan Cheng has been developing a body of work since the 1990s in which matter, light and emptiness interact in a constant tension between energy and meditation. Trained in China, then settled in France, the artist draws on both the Eastern pictorial tradition - thinking of breath, of the inner landscape - and the heritage of Western lyrical abstraction. In Homme et Nature, the pictorial surface is built up in successive layers, combining impasto, transparency and abraded areas. The composition suggests a diffuse, almost effaced human presence, as if absorbed by the surrounding space. The muted tones, punctuated by bluish and purplish nuances, reinforce the impression of fusion between the figure and its environment, a central theme in Wang Yan Cheng's work. This painting fully illustrates the artist's research into the relationship between man and natural forces, not in opposition but in organic continuity. A work representative of his stylistic maturity, it follows in the footsteps of the compositions that have secured Wang Yan Cheng institutional recognition and a solid international market.
