James GUITET (1925-2010) - Lot 280
James GUITET (1925-2010) 60P.3.74 Oil on canvas Signed, titled and dated on back 130 x 89 cm Note: This 1974 canvas belongs to James Guitet's mature period, during which the artist developed a constructed abstraction based on the balance between geometric structure and the energy of gesture. The composition is organized around a cluster of converging lines that seem to spring from a dark triangular shape, creating a movement of projection towards the clear space of the canvas. Transparencies, superimpositions and variations in material give the whole a subtle depth, while the deliberately reduced palette reinforces the tension between light and density. Guitet explores a style of painting in which rigorous construction blends with an almost musical sensitivity to the rhythm and breathing of the surface. In the 1970s, his work became part of a personal search for lyrical abstraction and constructed abstraction, characterized by a great sobriety of means and constant attention to the relationship between emptiness, trace and light.
