Michel POTAGE (1949-2020) - Lot 295
Michel POTAGE (1949-2020) Flower of war, 2001 Oil pastel on paper Monogrammed and dated lower right, titled in the subject 64 x 49 cm Note: This work by Michel Potage, entitled Flower of war (2001), illustrates the artist's spontaneous, nervous universe, characterized by instinctive, almost graffiti-like drawing, in which writing, sign and figure mingle freely. Done in oil pastel on paper, the composition combines a stylized bouquet with inscriptions traced with great gestures, including the word "WAR", creating a deliberate contrast between the fragility of the flower and the violence suggested by the text. The stroke, deliberately rough and rapid, evokes an automatic writing style close to the spirit of art brut and certain neo-expressionist practices. The floral forms, repeated in an almost childlike manner, become symbols rather than representations, while the inscriptions give the whole a poetic, protesting dimension. Titled in the subject, monogrammed and dated, this work bears witness to the personal approach of Michel Potage, whose work explores the relationship between language, gesture and emotion, in a free, direct aesthetic that favors the energy of the line over the search for realism.
