Georges BARTOLI (1956)
Peasants against the European Union, Paris rue de Varenne 1979
Silver print
On the back, signed, titled, dated and numbered 1/30
Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm
Note: Photograph by Georges Bartoli, taken on rue de Varenne in Paris in 1979, entitled Paysans contre l'Union européenne (Peasants against the European Union).
The scene shows an unexpected confrontation between the rural world and urban authority. A farmer, carrying a sheep on his shoulders, faces several uniformed policemen, while a second animal is held at his side. The presence of these animals in the heart of the capital creates a striking, almost surreal contrast, reinforced by the glances of passers-by.
Bartoli captures a moment of social tension, linked to the agricultural demands of the time. The image, both documentary and symbolic, contrasts two worlds - that of the land and that of power - and expresses, with force and irony, the discrepancy between these realities.
