Photograph of Nazi extermination camp, crematoria, 1945 - Lot 246
Photograph of Nazi extermination camp, crematoria, 1945
Vintage silver print
Lapi stamp on back
Dimensions: 18 x 24.1 cm
Note: This 1945 photograph documents one of the most terrifying aspects of the Nazi concentration camp system: the crematoria used in the extermination camps. Taken after the liberation of the camps, it was part of the Allied effort to document the scale of the crimes committed.
The image shows the interior of a crematorium, with its arched brick openings and metal mechanisms, in an almost industrial coldness. The absence of human figures reinforces the chilling dimension of the scene: these installations, designed for mass killing and the erasure of bodies, bear witness to a methodical organization of destruction. The frontal, almost clinical framing evokes a survey of evidence rather than an artistic composition.
Beyond its documentary aspect, this photograph belongs to a corpus of images essential to the memory of the Shoah. These shots were used to establish the facts, particularly during the post-war trials, and are still today fundamental archives for history and transmission.
This period press print, stamped with a handwritten caption, is thus of major historical value. It is part of a direct testimonial approach, designed to bring people face to face with the material reality of the genocide and to preserve the memory of these places.
