Note: The event received little press coverage. Only photojournalist Jean-Pierre Laffont, sent by the Gamma agency, was commissioned to report on it. Today, his images provide invaluable testimony to this seminal moment. This image by Jean-Pierre Laffont captures a moment of rare intensity, at the heart of New York's first Gay Pride in 1970. The gesture of the couple, lying on the grass and embracing, is both intimate and political: in a context still strongly marked by repression and stigmatization, kissing publicly becomes an act of affirmation and freedom. The scene takes on a performative, almost militant dimension.
The presence of photographers around the couple adds a particularly powerful mise en abyme. Here, Laffont captures not only the event itself, but also its incipient media coverage: the stares, the focused cameras and the crowd convey an awareness of a historic moment in the making. The image thus questions the role of photojournalism in making social struggles visible.
Laffont's bold framing, contrasting the intimacy of the foreground with the distance of the observers, provides an essential record of this seminal day. Rarely covered by the press at the time, Laffont's photographs provide an invaluable archive of this event, which combines commitment, visibility and the affirmation of identities.
