Matthieu CHAZAL (1974-2024) - Lot 322

Matthieu CHAZAL (1974-2024) Along the Baltic Sea, Georgia, 2018 Silver print Signed, titled, dated on back Dimensions: 18 x 24 cm Note: In this photograph, Matthieu Chazal constructs a scene that is both intimate and architectural. The structure of the pontoon, with its massive pillars and receding lines, imposes a rigorous geometry that contrasts with the fragility of the bodies. The human figures, arranged in depth, seem to vacillate between exposure and retreat. In the foreground, the two women adopt almost modest postures, while in the background, the bathers occupy the space more freely. This tension between restraint and abandonment gives the image a subtle psychological dimension. Black and white reinforces the atmosphere, bringing out the textures of the concrete and water. Here, Chazal captures a suspended moment, where the banality of a summer scene takes on a silent strangeness, somewhere between documentary observation and almost theatrical composition.
