Frederic NOY (1965) - Lot 329
Frederic NOY (1965) Der El Salam , Tanzania 2000 Silver print Signed, dated, titled in the margin Handwritten caption countersigned on back Size including margins: 40 x 50 cm Note: Frédéric Noy captures here a simple yet disturbing scene, characteristic of his eye for ordinary gestures. The photograph, taken in Tanzania, shows a moment of play on the beach, but the composition gives it a more ambiguous dimension. The sunken, motionless body almost evokes a sculptural or funerary figure, while the other figure, seated, observes the scene with silent distance. The contrast between the movement of the waves and the immobility of the body reinforces the tension between life and the suspension of time. Black and white accentuates the materiality of sand, skin and water, while simplifying the reading of the image. As is often the case with Noy's work, the everyday shifts towards a more symbolic image, where play becomes a meditation on the body, childhood and fragility.
