José NICOLAS (1956) Demonstration against the Golfech nuclear power plant, 1979 Silver print On back, signed, titled, dated and numbered 1/8 Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm Note: In this 1979 photograph, José Nicolas captures a tense moment during a demonstration against the Golfech nuclear power plant. The moving silhouettes, some shielding their faces, evoke the violence of the confrontation and the presence of tear gas. The immersive framing places the viewer at the heart of the scene, among the demonstrators. The blurring of certain gestures and the dispersal of bodies reinforce the sense of chaos and urgency. Black and white accentuates the contrasts between smoke, sky and figures, giving the image a dramatic force. The work bears witness to a committed documentary eye, capturing the intensity of a historic moment and the reality of social conflict.
