José NICOLAS (1956) - Lot 387

José NICOLAS (1956) Romanian Moldavia, 1990 Silver print On back, artist's stamp, signed, titled, dated, numbered 1/8 Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm Note: In this photograph, taken in Romanian Moldavia in 1990, José Nicolas captures a moment of tension in the midst of a group gathered around a gas pump. A man in the foreground, his gestures brusque and his gaze determined, seems to act under the watchful, worried gaze of the crowd. The composition, tight and frontal, accentuates the human density and emotional charge of the scene. The faces, very much in evidence, convey a mixture of expectation, curiosity and nervousness. The background, barely legible, leaves plenty of room for expressions and gestures. The post-communist context of Eastern Europe shines through, suggesting a period of uncertainty and upheaval. With his direct, immersive approach, José Nicolas delivers a powerful testimony to a society in transition, where social tensions are apparent in everyday life.
