José NICOLAS (1956)
Departure of the shuttle for the mainland, Belle Ile en Mer 1983
Silver print
On back, signed, titled, dated and numbered 2/8
Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm
Note: In this scene shot in Belle-Île-en-Mer, José Nicolas captures a suspended moment as a shuttle departs. In the foreground, three people seated on a bench chat, joined by a fourth figure leaning towards them, as if to extend the conversation one last time. Their silhouettes form a compact, intimate group, contrasting with the open space of the harbor.
In the background, the boat slowly pulls away, laden with passengers, introducing a narrative dimension: that of departure, separation or journey. The horizon and jetty structure the image, while the water occupies a large part of the frame, reinforcing the sense of distance.
The sober, balanced black and white accentuates the softness of the scene and the temporality of the moment. True to his eye for detail, José Nicolas captures here a simple yet emotionally charged situation, where expectation and movement respond to each other.
