Otto VAN BOSCH (XIX-XX) - Lot 12
Otto VAN BOSCH (XIX-XX) Young Boy in Sailor's Uniform, c. 1900 Vintage silver print Dimensions: 22.4 x 16.2 cm Note: This portrait perfectly illustrates studio photography at the end of the XIXᵉ century, where staging plays a central role in the construction of the image. Otto Van Bosch here depicts a young boy in sailor's uniform, a particularly popular theme at the time, associated with values of discipline, adventure and social climbing. The costume, often on loan from the studio, contributes to the idealization of childhood. The elaborate pose shows the child in a dreamy pose, gazing upwards and leaning on his hands. This almost theatrical gesture evokes imagination and innocence, reinforcing the sentimental dimension of the image. The artificial backdrop - rocks and a painted background - places the scene in an artificial world typical of photographic studios, where idealized nature is recreated. The print, with its sepia tones and soft modeling, accentuates this impression of timelessness. It testifies as much to the photographer's technical expertise as to the social codes of the time, when photography became a means of staging oneself and projecting oneself towards an ideal.
