EUGENE IONESCO, the playwright (of the absurd) with T. Chelton, M. Jacquemot, J. Mauclair... (at the Studio des Champ-Elysées for the play "Les Chaises", 1956) and with Jean-Louis Barrault (at the Théâtre de France for the play "la soif et la faim", 1966). 2 photos by Studio Bernand Vintage silver prints, captioned (one with label) Stamps (including Studio) and annotations on backs Dimensions: 18.2 x 23.3 cm & 24.3 x 18 cm Folds, one photo warped Note: Eugène Ionesco (1909-1994), Franco-Romanian playwright and essayist, is one of the leading figures of the theater of the absurd. His work, marked by a questioning of dramatic conventions and language, made its mark in the 1950s with such classic plays as La Cantatrice chauve, La Leçon and Les Chaises. These photographs document two moments in Parisian theatrical life: one taken at the Studio des Champs-Élysées in 1956 during the performance of Les Chaises, in the company of Tsilla Chelton, Michel Jacquemont and Jacques Mauclair, among others; the other at the Théâtre de France in 1966, where Ionesco appeared alongside Jean-Louis Barrault for the play La Soif et la faim. They testify to the author's central role in the renewal of post-war European theater.
