UNITED STATES. NUCLEAR. - Lot 247
UNITED STATES. NUCLEAR. Jean-Pierre LAFFONT (1935) and TANNENBAUM Set of 4 silver prints: U.S. Army simulates nuclear accident, Nevada desert, April 18-24, 1979 Power plant powered by electric energy, April 19, 1983, Long Island Dimensions: 30 x 20 cm Yellowed edges on one photo Note: A particularly evocative documentary set, these four silver prints by Jean-Pierre Laffont and Tannenbaum bear witness to nuclear concerns in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The photographs include a nuclear accident simulation organized by the US military in the Nevada desert between April 18 and 24, 1979, and a nuclear-powered power plant on Long Island in 1983. These images, marked by the presence of protective suits, safety devices and almost unreal desert landscapes, reflect the atmosphere of technological and geopolitical tension typical of the Cold War. Through a sober, direct aesthetic, the photographers capture the issues surrounding nuclear safety, the fear of contamination and American industrial power. The ensemble has strong documentary and historical value, illustrating a major 20th-century issue through the eyes of photographers committed to contemporary reportage. The prints are in satisfactory condition, despite yellowed edges on one of the photographs, consistent with their age.
