KATHLEEN HUGUES - Lot 200
KATHLEEN HUGUES Photomontage for the promotion of Jack Arnold's 3-D (Relief) Noir film "The Glass Web", 1953. Photo, vintage silver print, credits below image, captioned (two labels) and stamped (date) on back. 20.8 x 25.3 cm including edges. Note: pectacular publicity photomontage depicting Kathleen Hughes in a visual composition typical of 1950s Hollywood studios. The image plays on a mise en abyme effect - the giant female figure dominating a movie theater - in direct relation to the promotional pitch for the film shot in 3D (film noir in 3D), a process that was still innovative at the time. Produced by Universal Pictures, The Glass Web (1953) was part of the wave of films exploiting immersive technologies in the early 1950s. This type of visual, designed for press and promotional use, is sought after today for its strong graphic aesthetic and its emblematic character of the Hollywood Golden Age.
