Bernard BERTHOIS-RIGAL (1927-2018) - Lot 35
Bernard BERTHOIS-RIGAL (1927-2018) Restitué, 1985 Paint, collage and fabric additions Signed, titled and dated at bottom 81 x 65 cm Note: This work by Bernard Berthois-Rigal, created in 1985, illustrates the artist's singular approach, based on the combination of painting, collage and added elements, in a construction that evokes icons, ritual objects and relief paintings. The composition is organized around a central axis structured like an altarpiece, where a stylized figure on a pedestal dialogues with a suspended frame, reinforcing the symbolic and almost sacred dimension of the whole. The use of papers, fabrics and surface-integrated materials gives the work a rich, assemblage-like texture, while the patinated tones and visible traces of mounting suggest a recomposed memory, a recurring theme in the artist's work. Berthois-Rigal thus develops a plastic language in which the image seems restored, fragmented and then reconstructed, in keeping with the title Restitué. In the 1980s, Berthois-Rigal's work became part of a personal quest at the crossroads of painting, the object and symbolic art, where the surface of the painting becomes a space for meditation, combining archaeological, mythical and architectural references.
