Note: Jean SOUVERBIE (1891-1981) occupies a singular place in French painting of the XXᵉ century. Trained by Maurice Denis and influenced by Cubism as much as by the classical heritage, he developed a monumental figurative work in which the construction of forms and the balance of compositions hold an essential place. A professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was also a key figure in the revival of monumental art in France.
Produced in 1960, La Cueillette illustrates the artist's attachment to timeless scenes inspired by rural life. The rigorously structured composition reveals the constant quest for harmony and monumentality that characterizes his mature work.
