CHINESE PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY ON PAPER - Lot 233
CHINESE PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY ON PAPER
Ink and light highlights on paper, featuring a painted scene accompanied by calligraphic inscriptions and stamps. Antique mounting on support, with various accidents, wear, creases, tears and restorations due to age and conservation conditions.
The style of execution, the quality of the line and the nature of the support make it possible to situate this work probably between the 18th and 19th centuries, or even earlier, subject to closer examination. This work bears witness to the Chinese scholarly tradition of combining painting, poetry and calligraphy in a single composition, according to the aesthetic principles of scholarly artists.
Despite its deteriorated state of preservation, the work is of historical, documentary and collector's interest to connoisseurs of early Asian art, not least because of its presumed antiquity, its authenticity and the joint presence of painting and calligraphy.
Condition: old mounting damaged, wear, creases, tears and various visible alterations.
