John Harrison LEVEE (1924–2017) - Lot 5
John Harrison LEVEE (1924–2017) Mixed media on panel Signed and dated 2012 in the lower right corner On the back, countersigned and dated April 1, 2012 Dimensions: 60 x 60 cm Crease in the cardboard at the bottom. Note: A work by John Harrison Levee (1924–2017), a major figure in postwar American abstraction, this mixed media on panel dated 2012 belongs to the artist’s final creative period. Having lived in France for much of his career, Levee developed a personal visual language that blends gestural abstraction, geometric construction, and textural treatment. This composition juxtaposes two vast black forms with striated reliefs, cut into irregular facets, against a light background enlivened by lines, splashes, and touches of yellow that accentuate the tension between stability and movement. The interplay between textured surfaces, structural lines, and colorful fragments reflects the artist’s constant exploration of the balance between forms and pictorial space. The geometric rigor is deliberately disrupted by broken contours and gestural interventions, which lend the work great vitality. Signed and dated 2012 on the front, countersigned and dated April 1, 2012, on the back, this composition perfectly illustrates John Harrison Levee’s later explorations, in which abstraction becomes a subtle dialogue between structure, material, and light. There is a slight crease in the cardboard at the bottom of the panel.
