*Otto WOLS (1913–1951) - Lot 11
*Otto WOLS (1913–1951) Face Drypoint Out-of-print edition for the volume *Visages* by Jean-Paul Sartre, published by Seghers 33 x 25 cm Note: Wols is considered one of the most distinctive figures in postwar European art. A pioneer of lyrical abstraction and Informel art, he created an intense and fragile body of work characterized by spontaneous lines, shifting forms, and a profound existential dimension. His artistic universe profoundly influenced postwar artists as well as thinkers associated with existentialism. This drypoint titled *Visage* reveals the full subtlety of his graphic language. Through a few vibrant and delicately incised lines, the artist brings forth an almost ghostly figure, hovering between appearance and disappearance. The composition, executed with great economy of means, attests to Wols’s unique expressive power, where the line becomes emotion and inner tension. This out-of-text print was created for Jean-Paul Sartre’s book *Visages*, published by Éditions Seghers, highlighting the close ties between the artist and the intellectual circles of his time. A rare and refined work, particularly sought after by connoisseurs of modern art, printmaking, and the world of Wols.
