Francisco GONZALES, José Mesa ACCOSTA Mataparda. My Journey with Ledrú. Isla de la Fotografía, 1991. Photography album by José Mesa Acosta Mataparda Black-and-white photographs Shows signs of wear Note: Published in 1991, this book is one of the seminal works of contemporary Canarian photography. Photographer José Mesa Acosta, known by the pseudonym Mataparda, follows in the footsteps of French naturalist André-Pierre Ledru, who stayed in Tenerife in 1796. Through a series of black-and-white photographs, taken with handmade cameras and experimental techniques, the author offers a poetic and timeless reinterpretation of the island’s landscapes, seeking to recapture the viewpoints described by Ledru more than two centuries earlier. Texts by Francisco Gonzáles accompany this photographic journey, in which memory, history, and landscape intertwine. The book is now considered one of Mataparda’s major works and an important milestone in the revival of creative photography in Tenerife in the early 1990s. It was published by the Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife as part of the Isla de la Fotografía project.
