David BALSELLS, Martin BARNES, et al. Napper i Frith. A Photographic Journey Through 19th-Century Iberia. Primera Publishing, Barcelona, 2007. Note: An important catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition *Napper i Frith. A Photographic Journey Through 19th-Century Iberia, held at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) from November 16, 2007, to February 10, 2008. The book chronicles one of the first major photographic journeys undertaken on the Iberian Peninsula in the 19th century by the Welsh photographer Robert Peters Napper (1819–1867), a contributor to the photographic publishing house Francis Frith & Co. Featuring 124 photographs, primarily albumen prints, the catalog showcases the landscapes, monuments, and scenes of daily life in Spain, Portugal, and Gibraltar during the 1860s. It also highlights Napper’s pioneering role in the naturalistic depiction of the human figure, at a time when travel photography generally focused on architecture and historic sites. Essays by David Balsells, Martin Barnes, Roger Taylor, Juan Naranjo, and several other specialists situate this body of work within the history of European photography and the first major photographic journeys. Published in large format, this 223-page volume is richly illustrated and stands today as a definitive reference on Robert P. Napper and the early days of documentary photography in Spain. large format, 223 pp, Good condition
