EDITH PIAF, FASHION LOOK
At the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, where the singer performed "Le Bel indifférent," a one-act play written for her by Jean Cocteau in 1940.
This play would inspire Jean-Luc Godard to create one of his first short films, “Charlotte et son Jules” (a selection of items from which is featured in this sale).
Photograph, vintage silver print, unmarked on the reverse.
21 x 17 cm, including white border.
Remnants of paper glued to the back.
Note: In 1940, Édith Piaf temporarily set aside her cabaret performances to take the stage in “Le Bel Indifférent,” a one-act play written especially for her by Jean Cocteau. On the stage of the Bouffes-Parisiens, the singer portrayed a woman confronted by her lover’s silence and indifference, in a role that echoed the dramatic intensity of her repertoire. This work by Cocteau would go on to have a significant influence on cinema, notably in the films of Jean-Luc Godard.
