Jean FAUTRIER (1898–1964) - Lot 331
Jean FAUTRIER (1898–1964)
Landscape of Port-Cros
Etching and aquatint on Japanese paper
Numbered VI/XXV in the lower left corner and signed in pencil in the lower right margin
25 x 32.5 cm
Bibliography: Engelberts 1945/1
Note: Jean Fautrier (1898–1964) stayed on the island of Port-Cros on several occasions; its Mediterranean landscapes inspired a significant portion of his work. In this *Landscape of Port-Cros*, nature is reduced to a few lines and swaths of color in shades of pink and yellow, straddling the boundary between figuration and abstraction. This economy of means, characteristic of his artistic explorations, lends this print on Japanese paper—of which only twenty-five copies were made—a great delicacy.
