Note: An American painter who lived in North Africa for many years, Louis John Endres trained at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts, then in Paris under Claudio Castelucho at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. After several trips to the Maghreb, he set up his studio in Marrakech, then in Rabat, where he devoted himself in particular to depicting Moroccan landscapes and figures.
In *On the Balcony*, the artist depicts a young woman seated, dressed in a floral fabric and adorned with jewelry. The meditative pose, the precision of the drawing, and the warm tones reflect an approach to portraiture that is both academic and sensitive. The model, captured in a natural pose, occupies almost the entire composition, while the understated background draws the viewer’s gaze to her face and the elegance of her attire.
