Paolo BONI (1926–2017) - Lot 367
Paolo BONI (1926–2017) Chimera, 1962 Carborundum engraving Signed, dated, titled, and numbered as one of 12 copies. 52 x 35 cm (sheet), 33 x 24 cm (the plate) Framed Note: This carborundum engraving, created by Paolo Boni in 1962, reflects the artist’s exploration of printmaking techniques and textural effects. The composition, titled *Chimera*, is built from organic and fragmented forms, whose irregular contours seem to emerge from the surface of the paper like imprints or reliefs. The use of carborundum—a process that produces rich, grainy textures—gives the image an almost tactile quality, characteristic of the graphic experiments of the 1950s and 1960s. Here, Boni develops a visual language at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, where the forms evoke silhouettes, fossils, or imaginary assemblages, in keeping with the work’s title. Printed in a very limited edition of 12 copies, this print illustrates the artist’s interest in innovative technical processes and a free visual style, closely aligned with the spirit of postwar European abstraction.
