BUS STOP - BUS STOP - MARILYN MONROE - Lot 16
BUS STOP - BUS STOP - MARILYN MONROE Marilyn Monroe, Don Murray... film by Joshua Logan, 1956. 7 stills, vintage silver prints cropped (cut) for reproduction in "Le Film complet" magazine/romanciné (no. 613), number (annotated in ink) in corner of each image, production stamp and annotations (including magazine name and number) on backs. From 17 x 23.4 cm to 22.7 x 18.4 cm. Note: Produced for Joshua Logan's Bus Stop in 1956, these set photographs show Marilyn Monroe at a pivotal moment in her career, seeking to move beyond the image of a mere sex symbol imposed by Hollywood. In the role of Cherie, a vulnerable, independent cabaret singer, the actress delivers a more nuanced, dramatic performance, hailed at the time for its sincerity and emotional depth. These vintage silver prints bear witness both to the world of 1950s American cinema and to the making of the Monroe star through promotional photography. Intimate scenes, moments of sentimental tension and show sequences reveal all the ambivalence of her character, between glamour, fragility and the desire for emancipation. Bus Stop remains one of Marilyn Monroe's most important films today, marking a decisive step in her affirmation as a true actress beyond the Hollywood mythos.
