MONEY - Lot 19
MONEY Antonin Artaud and Pierre Alcover on the set of Marcel L'Herbier's film, 1928. Posterior silver print (1960s), annotated on the back. 16.5 x 22.5 cm including blank edges. Note: Taken during the shooting of Marcel L'Herbier's L'Argent in 1928, this photograph reunites Antonin Artaud and Pierre Alcover in the lavish, modern world of one of the great masterpieces of French silent cinema. Adapted from Émile Zola's novel, the film unfolds a spectacular vision of the power of finance, corruption and speculation in a society fascinated by progress and money. The attention paid to sets, Art Deco furniture and image composition perfectly illustrates Marcel L'Herbier's ambitious, avant-garde aesthetic. The presence of Antonin Artaud lends this photograph a particularly singular dimension. Poet, writer, theater theorist and a major figure of the 20th-century avant-garde, Artaud occupies an essential place in modern cultural history, far beyond his cinematic activity. L'Argent remains today an exceptional testimony to French cinema at the end of the silent era, where visual innovation, formal experimentation and social reflection come together in a monumental work.
