LES CHEMINS DE KATMANDOU - BIRKIN - Lot 22
LES CHEMINS DE KATMANDOU - BIRKIN Jane Birkin and Renaud Verley on the set of André Cayatte's film, 1969. Photo by Giancarlo Botti, vintage silver print, stamped (including the photographer) and annotated on the back. 28.8 x 23.2 cm. Paper fracture at one edge. Note: Taken during the shooting of André Cayatte's Les Chemins de Katmandou in 1969, this photograph by Giancarlo Botti captures the troubled, melancholy atmosphere of a film deeply rooted in the culture of the late 1960s. Alongside Renaud Verley, Jane Birkin appears here in an intimate, fragile setting, where the contrasting lighting and interior décor convey the themes of wandering, spiritual quest and generational disenchantment that run through the film. Adapted from René Barjavel's novel, Les Chemins de Katmandou testifies to French cinema's interest in the counter-culture movements and libertarian aspirations of the post-1968 era. Jane Birkin, then at the start of her French career, was already imposing that singular presence blending modernity, vulnerability and freedom of tone, which would make her one of the great artistic and cultural icons of her era. The eye of Giancarlo Botti, a photographer attentive to the filming atmosphere and the figures of European cinema, gives this vintage silver print a dimension that is both documentary and profoundly aesthetic.
