LAUREN BACALL - Lot 39
LAUREN BACALL Humphrey Bogart's companion, visiting the set of John Huston's film "The African Queen", 1951/52. Photo, vintage silver print, credits below image, muted back. 25.5 x 20.5 cm including edges. Note: Taken during the filming of John Huston's The African Queen (1951-1952), this photograph shows Lauren Bacall in a more relaxed, luminous setting than the sophisticated roles with which her image is often associated. A companion of Humphrey Bogart, who starred in the film alongside Katharine Hepburn, she appears here on a visit to the African set, in a summery outfit that contrasts with the black, urban glamour of her major Hollywood roles. The spontaneity of the pose and the outdoor setting give the image an almost documentary quality. The legendary couple of American cinema, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart embody one of the great symbols of the Hollywood Golden Age. Their association, both on screen and in real life, had a profound impact on the imaginary world of film noir and classic American cinema. This photograph is therefore of particular interest: it bears witness not only to the filming of one of John Huston's masterpieces, but also to the discreet presence of an actress who became one of the most elegant and emblematic figures of 20th-century cinema.
