L'IMPERATRICE ROUGE - THE SCARLET EMPRESS - DIETRICH - Lot 64
L'IMPERATRICE ROUGE - THE SCARLET EMPRESS - DIETRICH Marlene Dietrich on the set of Josef von Sternberg's film, 1934. Photo, silver print on vintage cartoline paper, credits under image, muted back. 29.5 x 24 cm including edges. Note: Directed by Josef von Sternberg in 1934, The Scarlet Empress is one of the most famous collaborations between the filmmaker and Marlene Dietrich. Inspired by the youth of Catherine II of Russia, the film is today considered a masterpiece of pre-Code Hollywood cinema, remarkable for its baroque aesthetic, monumental sets and Dietrich's sophisticated photography. Period promotional prints issued by Paramount, notably on cartoline paper with printed credits, are among the most sought-after documents relating to the actress's career and the cinema of the 1930s.
