LES DIABLES - THE DEVILS - Lot 147
LES DIABLES - THE DEVILS Prohibited photos for the promotion and exhibition of Ken Russell's film in France, 1971. 11 photos, vintage silver prints, censor stamp ("Visa refusé" probably for erotic/sexual scenes, possession...) on all backs. Approx. 12 x 9 cm each. Note: Exceptional set of eleven promotional photographs from The Devils, a film directed by Ken Russell and released in 1971, bearing a "Visa refusé" censor stamp on the back. Inspired by Aldous Huxley's book and the affair of the possessed women of Loudun, this controversial film blends religion, power, collective hysteria and sexuality in a baroque mise-en-scène that has become emblematic of the provocative cinema of the 1970s. Starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave, The Devils was censored and banned around the world due to certain scenes deemed blasphemous or erotic. Today, the press photographs that were censored or banned are of particular documentary and historical interest, bearing witness to the film censorship policies of the time. Coherent sets bearing official refusal stamps are rare on the market and sought after by collectors of fantasy cinema, censorship archives and cult films from the 1970s.
