HARPO MARX - Lot 158
HARPO MARX On harp and in 18th-century dress... during the shooting of Charles Reisner's film "The Big Store" - Les Marx (Brothers) au grand magasin", 1941. Photo, vintage silver print, annotated on back. 25.8 x 20.5 cm including blank edges. Note: Photograph depicting Harpo Marx on harp, dressed in 18thᵉ century-inspired costume, during the filming of The Big Store (The Marxes at the Department Store), a film directed by Charles Reisner and released in 1941. A member of the famous Marx Brothers alongside Groucho, Chico and Zeppo, Harpo Marx remains one of the most singular figures in classic American comedy thanks to his mute, whimsical and poetic persona. His harp playing, a regular feature of Marx Brothers films, is one of the most emblematic aspects of his screen persona. The Big Store was one of the group's last major productions during MGM's golden age. Period photographs of the Marx Brothers are particularly sought-after by collectors of Hollywood burlesque cinema.
