FREAKS - Lot 228
FREAKS The Monstrous Parade... film by Tod Browning, 1932. 2 photos, later silver prints (1960s), muted backs. 20.6 x 25.4 cm each. Note: Set of two photographs dedicated to Freaks (La Monstrueuse Parade), a film directed by Tod Browning and released in 1932. A true cult work in the history of American fantasy cinema, this MGM-produced film features real circus performers and fairground phenomena in a plot combining drama, horror and social criticism. Long censored or banned in several countries because of its shocking nature, Freaks is now considered a masterpiece of the cinema of the bizarre and a major work on marginality and difference. Director of Dracula (1931), Tod Browning drew on his experience of the fairground to create a film that is unique in the history of Hollywood cinema. These later prints from the 1960s testify to the film's renewed cinephile interest at a time when it was gradually acquiring cult status among fans of fantasy and underground cinema.
