THEODOR WERNER - Lot 80
THEODOR WERNER The abstract painter in his studio in Berlin, 1955. Photo by Fritz Eschen, stamped by the photographer and the painter + annotated on the back. 23.5 x 17.8 cm. Signs of handling, most of which are visible only when held up to the light. Note: This photograph, taken in 1955 by Fritz Eschen, shows Theodor Werner in his Berlin studio, in the midst of his creative work. A leading figure in postwar German abstraction, Werner contributed to Germany’s artistic revival by developing a visual language based on color, rhythm, and free geometric forms. Drawing on traditions inherited from the Bauhaus and constructive abstraction, he contributed to the intellectual and cultural reconstruction of the German art scene after World War II. Fritz Eschen, the photographer behind this portrait, is considered one of the great photographic chroniclers of 20th-century Berlin. This print thus serves as a valuable document of the working world of a major figure in European abstraction and of Berlin’s artistic life in the 1950s.
