MARC CHAGALL - Lot 87
MARC CHAGALL Holding one of his ceramics at his home in Vence, 1953. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned (dated label covering a stamp), 18.2 x 22.2 cm including white borders. Note: This photograph, taken in 1953, shows Marc Chagall holding one of his ceramic pieces at his home in Vence during a particularly prolific period of his career. Having settled in the south of France after World War II, the artist was then exploring new creative fields, notably ceramics, sculpture, tapestry, and stained glass, while continuing his work as a painter. Created primarily in Vallauris, his ceramics translate into terracotta the poetic world for which he is renowned: biblical figures, fantastical animals, lovers, and motifs inspired by his memories. This vintage print offers a precious glimpse into Chagall’s private life and illustrates the breadth of his artistic explorations beyond painting.
