ANDRE VERDET - Lot 92
ANDRE VERDET A versatile artist in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, presenting one of his paintings, 1950s. Photo by Edward Quinn, vintage silver print, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. 24 x 18.2 cm, including the white margin at the bottom. Some signs of handling and a few imperfections in the varnish (visible only when held up to the light). Note: This photograph taken by Edward Quinn in the 1950s shows André Verdet in Saint-Paul-de-Vence presenting one of his paintings. A poet, painter, sculptor, and cultural organizer, Verdet held a unique place in the postwar artistic life of the French Riviera. Close friends with Pablo Picasso, Jacques Prévert, and Georges Braque, he played an active role in raising the profile of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, which became one of the major centers of 20th-century artistic creation. Edward Quinn, the go-to photographer for artists and personalities on the Riviera, left behind an exceptional record of this creative community. This vintage print is thus a precious document of André Verdet’s world and of the artistic effervescence that characterized the Saint-Paul-de-Vence region at that time.
