CHARLES LAPICQUE - Lot 104
CHARLES LAPICQUE The painter in his studio with two paintings… 1951. 3 photos (including two by Studio Hervochon), silver gelatin prints on vintage card stock, stamped by the photographer and annotated (handwritten signature + titles of the painter’s works) on the back of two prints. 17.8 x 11.5 cm to 12.5 x 18 cm. Note: This set of three photographs taken in 1951 shows Charles Lapicque in his studio along with two of his works, offering a particularly interesting glimpse into the painter’s world. A major figure in postwar French painting, Lapicque developed an original artistic language based on a bold use of color, a dynamic construction of space, and a highly personal interpretation of historical, seascape, and landscape subjects. His explorations of visual perception and light have had a significant influence on several generations of artists. The documentary value of this collection is enhanced by the handwritten annotations on the reverse, including the artist’s autograph signature and the titles of some of the works depicted. These photographs thus constitute a valuable record of the career and creative environment of one of the most distinctive painters on the 20th-century French art scene.
