MARC CHAGALL AND GEORGES AURIC - Lot 112
MARC CHAGALL AND GEORGES AURIC At the unveiling of the ceiling at the Paris Opera, 1964. 2 photographs by René Saint-Paul, vintage silver gelatin prints, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the backs. 18 x 12.8 cm each, including white borders; Note: These two photographs by René Saint-Paul capture Marc Chagall and Georges Auric at the unveiling of the famous ceiling of the Paris Opera in 1964. Commissioned by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, this monumental work marks one of the most significant artistic events in France during the 1960s. In it, Chagall pays tribute to the great composers and masterpieces of the operatic repertoire in a vibrant, colorful composition that has become one of the symbols of the Palais Garnier. The presence of Georges Auric—composer, member of the Group of Six, and administrator of the Paris Opera at the time—underscores the institutional and cultural significance of this inauguration. These vintage prints thus serve as a precious record of a major moment in 20th-century French artistic history, bringing together two iconic figures of modern art.
