TATTOO - II - Lot 124
TATTOO - II Tattoo… 1950s. 3 photos, silver gelatin prints on slightly tinted vintage card stock, annotated on the back of one print. 10.8 x 8.2 cm each (one photo has frayed white edges). One print has a scratch. 10 x 7.2 cm each, including borders. Note: This set of three photographs from the 1950s is dedicated to the world of tattooing, a subject that was still relatively underdocumented at a time when the practice was largely associated with maritime, military, and carnival circles, as well as popular entertainment. These prints reflect the interest in body modification and forms of self-expression that emerged in the mid-20th century. Beyond their documentary value, these images offer a rare glimpse into the motifs, customs, and representations of tattooing before its widespread adoption in contemporary culture. Today, such photographs are highly sought-after sources for the history of body modification, vernacular photography, and popular culture.
