ARTISTIC NUDE - Lot 125
ARTISTIC NUDE Female… 1930s. Two photographs, one by Yrélaw (Lucien Waléry) and one by Julien Mandel, silver gelatin prints on vintage matte card stock; photo credits appear in the images; unmarked on the reverse. Approximately 18 x 23 cm each, including edges. A slight mark on the paper of one photograph. Note: This set of two female nude photographs taken in the 1930s bears the signatures of Yrélaw—the pseudonym of photographer Lucien Waléry—and Julien Mandel, two renowned specialists in glamour photography and artistic nudes. At a time when this genre was experiencing significant growth, these artists contributed to the evolution of the representation of the female body, blending aesthetic exploration, Art Deco influences, and academic tradition. Their compositions emphasize the elegance of the poses, the modeling of light, and the graphic quality of the image, in an approach that places the nude within the realm of the fine arts as much as that of studio photography. These vintage prints thus serve as representative testaments to the golden age of photographic nudes during the interwar period.
