JOSEPHINE BAKER - V - Lot 139
JOSEPHINE BAKER - V The Year 1959: the show “Paris mes amours” and various other items… 4 photos, vintage silver gelatin prints, all captioned (dated labels), stamped, and annotated on the backs (12.5 x 17.3 cm to 17.7 x 23.8 cm); included is a vintage program from the Olympia (20 illustrated pages, 27 x 21 cm) and a mimeographed brochure with a pink feather attached to the cover (18 stapled pages, 31 x 21 cm). Note: This collection dedicated to Josephine Baker in 1959 brings together four vintage photographs, as well as an Olympia program and a promotional brochure related to her shows in the late 1950s, notably *Paris mes amours*. At that time, the artist remained one of the most famous figures in the entertainment world, pursuing an international career that blended vaudeville, song, and humanitarian work. The captioned and dated photographs document various public appearances by the woman who, for several decades, had embodied the spirit of Roaring Twenties Paris while maintaining immense popularity with the public. The illustrated program from the Olympia and the promotional brochure enhance the documentary value of this collection, offering insight into the staging and marketing surrounding her performances. Taken together, these items constitute a valuable record of a period of artistic maturity for a major figure in the history of music hall and 20th-century culture.
