GINO SEVERINI - Lot 164
GINO SEVERINI Futurist painter… 1950s. Photo by Germaine Nordmann, vintage silver print, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. 12.8 x 18 cm. Imperfections in the print at the bottom of the image and two slightly damaged corners. Note: This photograph from the 1950s depicts Gino Severini, one of the leading figures of the Italian Futurist movement. Alongside Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Umberto Boccioni, and Giacomo Balla, Severini participated from the early years of the 20th century in the development of a new artistic language celebrating movement, speed, modernity, and the transformations of urban life. Having settled in Paris very early on, he also played a key role in the exchanges between the Italian and French avant-garde movements, developing a body of work that later evolved toward Cubism and then toward more classical explorations. Taken by photographer Germaine Nordmann, this portrait attests to the recognition the artist enjoyed toward the end of his career. This vintage print is thus a valuable document dedicated to one of the leading figures of the European avant-garde movements of the 20th century.
