NICOLAS SCHÖFFER - Lot 174
NICOLAS SCHÖFFER Mobiles, at Harriet Hubbard Ayer’s Salons—Paris, 1950s. 2 photos (including one by Ervin Marton), period silver gelatin prints (including one on card stock), stamped (including the photographer’s stamp on the back of one), and annotated on both. 23 x 17.5 cm each. Note: This set of two photographs from the 1950s is dedicated to Nicolas Schöffer’s mobiles and kinetic sculptures exhibited at the Harriet Hubbard Ayer Galleries in Paris. Considered one of the pioneers of kinetic and cybernetic art, Schöffer profoundly revitalized contemporary art by integrating movement, light, space, and new technologies into the heart of his work. As early as the 1950s, his visionary explorations foreshadowed many developments in technological and interactive art. The Harriet Hubbard Ayer salons, a social and cultural hub frequented by the Parisian elite, provided his creations with significant visibility among the public and collectors. Among these images is a photograph taken by Ervin Marton, a renowned figure in humanist photography. These vintage prints thus serve as valuable testimonies to the emergence of kinetic art in the postwar art scene.
