LOUIS DE FUNES, POLICE OFFICER… - Lot 218
LOUIS DE FUNES, POLICE OFFICER… "La Grosse Valse" at the Théâtre des Variétés, a revue by Robert Dhéry performed in 1962 by the Branquignols troupe with Louis de Funès in the role of a gendarme, the precursor to the film series directed (beginning in 1964) by Marcel Girault, 1962. 6 photos, vintage silver gelatin prints, stamped and annotated on the back. 18 x 24 cm each. Some dust on the prints. Note: This set of six photographs taken in 1962 is dedicated to *La Grosse Valse*, a revue by Robert Dhéry presented at the Théâtre des Variétés by the Branquignols troupe. It features Louis de Funès in the role of a gendarme, a character that foreshadows the one he would make famous starting in 1964 in the *Gendarmes* series directed by Jean Girault. At that time, the actor was on the rise and was already developing the comedic traits—nervous gestures, burlesque authority, and boundless energy—that would bring him international fame. The Branquignols troupe, founded by Robert Dhéry, played a significant role in postwar French comedy theater and cinema, serving as a springboard for many artists. These vintage prints are therefore of particular interest as they document one of the stages leading up to the birth of a character who would become an icon of French comedy and a defining moment in Louis de Funès’s career.
